How To Make Roman Curtains

When you make roman curtains or roman blinds for your home, you will need some fabric, lining, small plastic rings, wooden or plastic dowels that measure around 3 centimeters in width, nylon cord, wall cleat, Velcro and wooden batten. You will also need 3 screw eyelets.

When you buy your fabric, make sure that you measure the window or the door that it is to hang from first. Add five centimeters to the width and ten centimeters to the length of the measurement you took for hemming purposes. Make sure that the dowels you purchase also have the same width as the window or door.

Once you have your lining and your fabric, you will need to sew these two together on both sides and at the bottom with an inch of allowance at the bottom and 2.5 centimeters allowance on each side. Use this allowance on the sides to create hems for the curtain and create a similar hem with the same measurement at the bottom between the edge of the fabric and the stitching that marks one inch from the bottom to create a pocket for the bottom dowel.

You will also need to make the rod pockets for the dowels that are to be found at certain intervals in the curtain. Measure three inch pieces of lining with the same width as your roman curtains and create your dowel pockets from these. Attach these to the blinds in even intervals of 6 to 8 inches, depending on the length of your curtains. Insert the dowels and sew up the edges to seal them in.

Once you have the dowels in the curtains, attach three eyelets each to each of these dowels and attach the top end of your curtain to the batten. Screw in three screw eyelets in the wooden batten with equal spacing in between each one and thread a nylon cord through each ring. Make sure that the screwed in batten eyelets and your dowel eyelets line up.

Thread the nylon cord through each row of eyelets and tie the end to the last three eyelets on the curtain. Knot the end of the three nylon cords together and the point where they hang from the side of your blinds. You now have a complete set of home-made roman curtains for your window or door.
